The Strand Magazine - A Brief History (An Antique Books Guide)

The Strand

It would be rude to have written a blog for quite some time and to not include a post about The Strand Magazine so here, after far too long, is my effort.

The Strand Magazine is one of the most iconic and recognizable British magazines. It ran from 1891 to 1950 an managed some 711 editions over the years. Immediate sales hit close to 300,000 and the magazine maintained a huge 500,000 readers for a number of decades.
To put that into perspective, Marie Claire recently hit 281,000 for the month of January this year. and The Strand was published at a time when the population of the UK was far smaller than it presently is.

What is it?

The magazine is a compilation of certain news stories, history articles, fiction pieces and celebrity interest. The pages were lavishly illustrated and the magazine paid homage to may a famous illustrator, even once featuring an illustrations drawn by Queen Victoria.

Who featured?
In a magazine based on articles it was essential that the regular columns gain followings and fortunately this indeed happened rather early on in the magazine's history. The magazine rose to real fame when a certain Arthur Conan Doyle decided to take part, publishing a monthly article following the now world-famous Sherlock Holmes. During this period, the magazine grew so popular that people regularly queued on the street when the issue was released each month just to get a copy.

Other famous contributors include Winston Churchill, Agatha Christie and H. G. Wells.

What is it worth?
Due to the popularity of the magazine many copies are now available to purchase, even dating back to the Victorian era.
Later editions are worth a few pounds but the first Sherlock Holmes editions can fetch up to £100 and over £400 for a few of the rarest.
First editions generally reach £40 on a good day.
